Our Sport, Learn and Move Project
Last year, Year 5 were very fortunate to have Darrell in from Plymouth Argyle running a project on the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Holy Cross were then chosen, out of all the Year 5 schools in Plymouth, to play in a penalty shoot-out against Stoke Damerel at Argyle.
This year we are fortunate to have the same project running for our new Year 5's and look forward to welcoming Darrell back every Thursday.

Welcome to Rowling class' weekly blog. Every term this will be updated and will outline the following term's work, so you can work on areas covered, at home with your child.
Spring Term 2018
Happy New Year and welcome back to our busy spring term. It's a short one but there's a lot we'll be packing into it!
This term is a real working term so the children will be working hard on their targets daily. Our topic is The Shang Dynasty where we are learning about Ancient China. Our 'Beat the Monster' story is based around Nian the Dragon and the myth around the origins of Chinese New Year and we will link our learning to our topic where possible and applicable. Our Music will be performing and composing Chinese-style music based around the pentatonic scale and we will be having a 'hook' day where we create Chinese lanterns and have a day's workshop based around Chinese art forms. In the second half of the term we hope to visit the Boston Tea Party for some cookery also.
The homework project work went home before the holidays so hopefully your child has made a start on this already. A copy is in our Home Learning link. There will be homework club on a Monday lunchtime with me and on a Friday after school with Mrs Potterton, which children need to sign up to. Children can use resources from school to support their learning.
In English we are reading 'The Kite Rider' and writing a 'Beat the Monster' story based on Nian the Dragon - a copy of which is on this page. We will move onto instructions for defeating a monster halfway through the term.
In Maths we are working on 2D shape and will them move onto fraction-based work. It's important children still regularly work on their tables and Times Tables Rockstars is a good way to do this. Any support around children using this, and Literacy Planet, is greatly appreciated.
Our Science is based around Materials and their Properties. Our RE topic is Revelation - looking for the extraordinary in the ordinary - beginning with the Baptism of Jesus and what that moment revealed about the person of Christ.
Games and PE will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. Children need to have kits at all times. These will be sent home for laundering at half term.
If you haven't already, please sign into our Class Dojo. A class reporter will be uploading a photo of learning taking place in class daily, so you can talk about what we've been learning with your children. Children are also posting, sometimes summarising their learning, which is fantastic to see!
I'll be in the playground every evening at 3:15 should you need to speak to me and can arrange a longer appointment if there's anything you want to discuss. Parent's Evenings will take place after half-term also where we can discuss your child's progress in more depth.
Happy New Year!
