School Meals

The new menu will go live on the CATERed web pages during the half-term break  https://www.plymouth.gov.uk/schoolseducationchildcareskillsandemployability/catered/ourmenuandprice

You will also find a full list of the allergens present in the menu on our website.

You will see that this menu also specifically highlights brand names of products that are well-known and trusted by your families including Quorn, Youngs, Yeo Valley and Heinz.

 Meal Price

There is NO INCREASE in the price for the paid for two-course meal.

The CATERed Board, which includes Head teacher Directors, have agreed that the meal price remains at £2.20 which is the lowest across the region.

 BREXIT

We provided a BREXIT Statement to all CATERed Schools and Academies last week and I attach this again for your information.

The Board are, however, mindful of the uncertainties ahead in terms of BREXIT so they have taken the decision that, as a business, we will need to keep the price under review.

The CATERed message to schools and parents is that we will continue to provide high quality, freshly prepared, hot meals using local and seasonal ingredients and we’ll continue to do so keeping all options and supply routes under review.

We do not expect to be having to compromise on our own standards or the School Food Standards and with our work nationally with LACA (www.laca.co.uk) and the All Party Parliamentary group on School Food we are well placed to understand the impacts and upcoming issues

It is, for example, considered that a No Deal BREXIT could, in the short to medium term, result in an increase in food costs of between 10-15%.

The CATERed Board has recently reviewed the current offer and, with the continuing pressure to reduce sugar in menus, a decision has been made to support the overall reduction in sugar consumption by removing the offer of apple juice from the start of the new winter menu.

The School Food Standards recommend that fresh drinking water is freely available at lunch times and that if another drink is offered this should be milk which will always be available as a choice to pupils taking a CATERed meal.

In recent government recommendations it has asked that all child minders, nurseries and schools adopt a water and milk only policy.

We will be offering Westcountry milk every lunchtime.

We continue to review recipes and portion sizes of desserts; this menu will see more fruit being offered alongside the dessert and an increase in fruit in the dessert choice to add in more natural sugars to the recipes.

New for this menu are all vegan dishes on one day per week. These a marked with VE on the menu.
