Mathematics
Our first half term’s learning will be based around number and place value. We will be writing, representing and spotting patterns when working with numbers 0-100.
English and DT
The children will continue with their daily Read Write Inc. sessions. In class we continue our development of reading and writing skills through a unit based on the wonderful story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We will also plan and make a healthy packed lunch for the main character, Mr Grinling.
Topic, Art and Computing
Our geography based topic this term is ‘Plymouth’, a study of our local area. We will be learning about the physical and human features of our locality, begin to read maps and plot routes using positional language. Our topic will begin with a trip to the Hoe where we will experience and draw many of these features for ourselves. Once we return to school, we have also have a go at painting vues from the Hoe in the style of local artist, Brain Pollard. In computing, the children will use the control programmable toy Beebot and to navigate a ship around a map of a dangerous coastline. The children will also use the BeeBot app and Tynker to write a simple algorithm with repeating commands. Throughout the topic digital literacy (online safety) skills will be developed.
Science
In our seasons topic we will be taking a closer look at what happens to the weather during different seasons. We will identify evergreen and deciduous trees in our local park and explore what hibernation is through a mini study on hedgehogs.
RE
In RE will be developing our appreciation of ourselves and the world around us as part of God’s creation. Following that, we will begin a unit on Sacraments where we will explore what happens during Baptism, Matrimony and the Eucharist.
PE
We will partake in a unit which focuses on coordination through a focus on movement skills.
PSHE
We will consider what it means to be part of Hargreaves class and consider and appreciate both our similarities and our differences. We will reconsider the meaning of each of our ‘Faith promises’, with a focus on how we keep ourselves and others safe in and around school and how we help to make our class a good place to learn.
