Supporting your child at home
Please continue to check this page for resources and ideas of how you can help your child at home in phonics and maths.
Supporting you child in phonics
This information booklet will explain the phonics teaching that happens in foundation, of which your child will be apart of every day. Included is information about what phonics is and some of the vocabulary your children will start to be learning and repeating probably at home. It also includes information about how you can support your child at home. If you would like more information or have any questions, please feel free to talk to us at any time. If you would like to book an appointment you can write a note in your child’s reading liaison book and we will write back to you.
To help support your child at home, we have made this video of the Phase 2 and 3 sounds in the order we teach them and the actions we use to help us remember them. We hope you find this useful.

Supporting your child with numeracy

There are many activities you can do to help you child’s mathematical skills:

  • Talk about the size of objects; compare which is bigger/smaller, taller/shorter. Making playdough is great for this (see below).
  • Talk about the shapes we see everyday in our environment.
  • Cooking with your child is a great way to introduce them to measurements, heavier/lighter.
  • Talk about the position of objects-behind, under, over, next to.
  • Counting toys, counting stairs, counting number of cars/buses you can see when walking or in the cars.
  • Number pairs/snap is great for number recognition and order.

There are also many interactive games available to practice counting and number songs:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/games/ CBeebies has lots of interactive games for maths and literacy. The children really enjoy the “Alphablocks” game in class.
